This is part of the opening ceremony of the Palio that took place on the 16th of August, 2006. The contrada shown here is the Pantera (“panther”). Just some information about the Palio: It is a horserace in which 10 out of 17 districts (or “contrade”, plural of “contrada”) of Siena participate by having horses represent the districts. It takes place twice a year: On the 2nd of July and on the 16th of August. It is a tradition that has existed and been preserved for centuries in the city of Siena. What’s shown here is the Piazza del Campo, however, when I was taking the video I was sitting on the roof of a building on the “border” of the Piazza del Campo. 😛
